Dr. Gilani's first experience in health care was serving as a night shift nurse’s aide while attending the University of Texas as an undergraduate. Ever since that formative time, he has developed a profound appreciation for caring for people at their most sick and vulnerable. He chose a career in Nephrology because it afforded him the opportunity to work within the full spectrum of patient care in a variety of settings and patient populations. He enjoys the several avenues that Nephrology provides to be a patient advocate. He feels that honest communication and intense counseling combined with the best medicine provide superior patient outcomes.

His areas of interest include nutritional interventions prevent kidney disease and kidney stones, kidney disease in elderly populations, and home dialysis modalities including peritoneal dialysis. Dr. Gilani is dedicated to serving the international communities health needs and has spent time training in hospitals in Spain, Argentina, Pakistan, and Nicaragua. He has made several trips to post-earthquake Haiti with teams to provide medical relief efforts.
